AirNavigator
The aim of this project is to develop an experimental GPS navigation application for ultralight aircrafts, using as hardware a vehicular TomTom navigator. The program, given a flight plan defined by the user, is able to provide navigation indications, including an HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator), along all the way points of the route until the final destination.
The idea
My initial idea was to develop this experimental navigator using a USB GPS receiver connected to a small netbook, and then after to build up some kind of embedded hardware to fit the small cockpit of an ultralight aircraft. But soon I realized that I had already all the necessary hardware: a vehicular TomTom One XL navigator.
This device have a lot of advantages:
- GPS receiver included: being already a navigator the GPS receiver (SiRF III) is integrated into the device
- Cheap: You can buy a used one with less than 50 €
- Compact: Can fit anywhere
- Good HW features: It has touchscreen, battery, 12V charger, SD memory card and/or internal memory, Bluetooth
- USB interface: This make easy and quick to access the memory
- Runs Linux: TomTom released all the specifications allowing anybody to write his own programs.
